Learn It, Then Earn It (For Dads)

There’s a difference between maleness and manliness. A person is a male by virtue of his sex (gender), his DNA. A male is not a man simply because of his age, his profession, his marital status, whether or not he’s a virgin, what he owns, or any other arbitrary factor. A male becomes a man when his life is manly. What is manliness? Virtue. This is one of the 3 main tenants of TrueManhood.com – nothing new for the readership.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church, in paragraph 1803, states that virtue is “the habitual and firm disposition to do the good.” The CCC clarifies that virtue is an action… doing… a verb. So when does a male become a man? When he does good. You’re a male reading this… are you a man or are you simply a male?
Thankfully, with the definition that the Church gives us, we don’t have to wonder whether or not a male is a man, which means that we don’t have to wonder whether or not our sons (or the males interested in our daughters) are men. It’s the benchmark by which we “grade” them. When we know that, we can move forward to help these males continue to live in a manly way. This brings me to my point…
Manliness isn’t given, manliness is earned. Before something can really be earned, someone must know what they are earning, thus males must first learn what manliness is before they can earn it. As fathers, it is our responsibility to not only live out manliness (ie: virtue) but to teach it. The world gives various versions of counterfeit manliness for our boys to shoot for (search “Cultural Manliness” on this site for more on the world’s main version) and if we don’t teach them what authentic masculinity is, their only option is the world’s option.
The world’s option isn’t an option for me. It’s not an option for my son, Dave Jr. It’s not an option for my daughters Lily, Emma, and Maria. The world’s option is a lie.
Let’s work together as Catholic fathers to teach our children (male and female) what masculinity is. If you ever wonder, just refer back to the Catechism, to TrueManhood.com, or to the “Guide to Virtue” found on my site. More to follow on dads teaching their sons what TrueManhood is all about.

REPOST – Ditch the Fantasy

I received yet another invitation to play Fantasy Football this year. That makes, well, several invitations. Because it was such a big article for me last year, and because I think it needs addressed again, I’m reposting my article “Ditch the Fantasy.”
Brothers, can I be honest with you? Really? I mean, can I really lay something out on the table and call you to task? Bros… it’s time to ditch the fantasy football leagues. Playing football… awesome. (Especially local pick-up games at the park. I played ball as a kid up into college. It taught me teamwork, hard work, discipline, tenacity, perseverance, and so many other great characteristics. It even – significantly – helped me pay for undergrad!) Watching football… fine. (I thoroughly enjoy it myself. It’s always been something we do in my family… gathering us together like nothing else can. Literally like nothing. else. can. Eating, talking, enjoying one another. It’s awesome.) Fantasy football… nah.
I’ve been getting jazzed for this season of late and excited about the Steelers’ run for their 7th championship (stop – don’t send hate mail!) In watching some stuff about the NFL and listening to some sports talk radio on my long commutes, and following a few threads here and there, I keep getting bombarded with the fantasy talk. I even went to a game recently (pre-season Vikings vs. Chiefs at Arrowhead – thanks Jeff!) and heard it there. Over the loud speaker, on the jumbotron, on posters. It boggles my mind that grown men get so into this garbage. Don’t you have better things to spend your time on? Can’t you find something productive to do? Sure, a lot of us spend time poorly on occasion. Sometimes it’s leisure, recreation, relaxation, etc. Sometimes, it’s just blatant idiocy. I have to be frank about this, even the name evokes the shear viciousness that is fantasy football.
For those who don’t know what fantasy football is, there are countless places to learn about it, but you won’t find that on TrueManhood.com. Sorry.
If you find yourself ready to attempt to justify fantasy to me, stop yourself, think through it, and ponder this: it is a fantasy. Fake. Fantasies lend themselves to sinfulness – idle behavior, sloth, selfishness, and deeper fantasy. We need to live in reality, not in fantasy. If you look up the definition of fantasy online, it will tell you that it’s “imagination – to the point of being improbable or impossible.” This is what you spend countless hours on each week? This is what gets you hot and bothered? Don’t tell me that you might win a $1,000 if you win your league. Don’t tell me about bragging rights over your brothers, co-workers, or poker buddies. Require more out of your life than fantasy. Our wives and children deserve more than fantasy. Our world deserves much more than fantasy.
Why do I care? ‘If I don’t like it, I don’t have to do it.’ Right? How many of you are thinking that right now? Guess why I care… because men have too many responsibilities that are going undone because we waste our lives on crap like fantasy football. To me, this isn’t much different than porn. Porn is a fantasy land. Unreality that leads to viciousness. If you don’t think it effects you and me, you’re wrong. When men don’t live lives of virtue, they’re living lives of viciousness. There’s no two-ways about it. We have tons of males running around like boys, playing games all day long, wasting away the good opportunities to be something, and to do something. Get it together, bros!
So, what are you going to do instead of fantasy football this year? I’d suggest anything along the lines of… anything but fantasy.

Tuesdays With Daddy – Times Gone By
February 7, 2012 by admin

A series of posts I used to write were called “Tuesdays with Daddy.” [They’re in the blog archives under the Fatherhood tab.] These posts were about my time at home, on Tuesdays, with my daughters. At the time, I had two toddler daughters that I was lucky enough to be able to spend special time with on Tuesdays. Today, I took the opportunity to stop working (I mostly work from home) and I went outside with them. It was a beautiful day and I figured it would do us all some good.
Nowadays, it’s not just my two girls, I also have a one year old son, Dave Jr. He’s really awesome, and we had a great time outside today. (Maybe if I can get the video edited together quickly enough, I will post the video of him riding on his four-wheeler by himself! Yes folks, he turned 1 last week and can ride the thing by himself!) All three of them were all over our fields and sincerely enjoying the outdoors, the sunshine, and even the brisk breeze that was lightly blowing today. I was running around with them, laughing and joking, holding them and hugging them, throwing them in the air, pushing them on the tree swing, watching them on the four-wheeler, playing t-ball, helping them ride their bikes, and showing them the old tractors. What a way to rejuvenate!
When I came in the house, it was time to get back to work. When I sat back down at my computer, I was so filled with joy, it was almost hard to sit still. I took an hour out of my workday to be with the people who are the most important in my life. Not only will they remember it, I will remember it. Not only did it bring life to them today, it brought life to me today. What a blessing my children are to me.
If you’re a father, and you’re like me, you often get bogged down in the “stuff that has to get done.” Work, helping your wife, chores around the house, helping your wife, this meeting and that meeting, taking care of the vehicles, oh yeah don’t forget prayer, helping your wife, going to the bank, making money, helping your wife… on and on. The “stuff” never stops. But without a doubt, your kids grow up more and more each day. Every once and a while, just drop what you’re doing and take your kids outside. If your kids are anything like mine, and they probably are, they really don’t care what they get to do with Daddy, they just know that they get to be with Daddy! Don’t let another day go by without spending this invaluable time with your kids.
Last thing… I have been really frustrated lately. I plan to write more on this in a coming post. My frustration stems from things that I see in our society, in the government, the 2012 presidential election, things that are happening in and to the Church and so on. I have to remember, and ask you to consider, this… our world isn’t doomed. Our world is set for joy, as long as we teach our kids how to live joyfully. Once we and those who die before us are gone, our kids are in charge. If they know how to live with joy, our world will be just fine.

Scandal, Scandal Everywhere

Does anyone else feel like Satan is really attacking the Church hard the past few weeks? And I don’t just mean his normal tactics; I’m talking huge attacks. He’s shaking things up close to the foundation and doing major damage in the hearts and minds of many wayward Catholics around the world. It seems like everywhere I look, every article that gets sent to me and every post about the Church on Facebook… it’s all slander, and scandal. In the past day, I read about 12 Catholic priests in South America coming out in favor of ‘gay rights’, about a former Lutheran pastor (married, with 6 children) becoming a Catholic priest and about the controversial statements made by Cardinal Schonborn of Vienna, Austria. These stories don’t shake my faith, but they spark doubt and confusion in the minds of many.
For those who don’t believe in Satan (the Prince of Lies), he exists. You don’t have to believe in him in order for him to exist. Actually, the more you don’t believe in him, the less you acknowledge his presence, the more work he can do in your life. He’s attacking the Church now, I believe, because people’s faith is weak and moral relativism is at an all-time high. Being aware of where you stand is essential in fighting Satan.
What are we to do about these attacks? How can one man, a guy like me, do anything to ‘right wrongs’ in the Church? How can I make a large enough impact to justify doing even one small thing? The answer starts at home. You MUST be living as an authentic disciple of Christ. If you are married, you must be encouraging your wife to do the same. If you have children, you must raise them in the faith. This is not a faith of ‘pick-and-choose’… your faith must be solid and unwaivering. Our faith isn’t individual to us. It is universal, to the entire Church. That prevents us from thinking we can make decisions of faith and morals on our own. If you’re living the faith at home, it translates into living it in the workplace, during leisure time and on vacation (at least it should.) If we live authentic lives for Christ, others will see and will want the joy that we have. This may seem too simplistic for some, but the truth of the matter is that arguing with people about scandals in the Church rarely allows for conversion, and only distances their desire for God.
With all of the scandals hitting the news lately, I encourage all of us to pray heartily for the Church. It is times such as these that we must remain faithful and firm in our resolution to defend against evil.

In a World of Negativity, Think Positive
There’s a lot of junk happening lately and lots of bad stuff happening in the world. We’ve got gigantic problems in Washington, we’re fighting a war in the Middle East where there hasn’t been peace, well, ever. We’re constantly facing persecution for being “moral, ethical citizens”. Babies are being destroyed for the sake of convenience and preference. A good deal of the time, it doesn’t seem like anything is ever going to get better.
Look on the bright side, we have lots to be thankful for. Someone, somewhere has it much, much worse than you or me. Belly-achin’ and complainin’ about stuff isn’t going to make anything better. Yes, there are plenty of really horrible things taking place in our world, but they shouldn’t effect our daily lives from being focused and centered on Christ.
Imagine how badly St. Paul had it… beatings, being stoned, imprisonment and so on! (Read Philippians 2:12-18.)
Thinking positively helps us take a bad situation and turn it into something decent. There’s serious power in the reality of the power of positive thought. I encourage everyone to try three things over the next three days, and see if your attitude changes.
- Refrain from complaining.
- Find a positive side to everything.
- Do something kind for someone else at least once a day.
After three days, after you’ve tried these three things, comment back, or email, or post on Facebook, or wherever. I want to know what you experienced.

Tuesdays with Daddy – “You Really Do Reap What You Sow”
November 18, 2009 by admin

Another installment of “Tuesdays with Daddy”. For those who don’t know, I stay home with my two young daughters on Tuesdays and always have something important to blog about.
Today, I realized that we really do reap what we sow. This morning, as I woke up with my two year old, I was amazed at how sweet she was. She was saying things to me, like, “Daddy, may I please have some more cereal?” and “Daddy, I love you, VERY MUCH!” and “Daddy, you’re wonderful!”
Do you see where I’m going with this? She’s repeating back to me phrases and statements (tone is important here, too) that I tell her often. If I regularly talked to her in rough words, or words that aren’t loving, caring and sincere, she would talk to me that way too. Eventually, she would probably speak to her teachers, coaches and friends in that same manner. Instead, I choose to speak to her in the way I want her to speak to me and the rest of the world – lovingly. (Be assured, I am firm when I need to be firm and scold when I need to scold.)
We really do reap what we sow. And we’re constantly being watched. With my girls, I’m being watched all the time. As a follower of Christ, I simply cannot choose to abandon this responsibility. I MUST work to exemplify Christ at all times. I drop the ball quite often (as many of you know) but continue to get up and fight. It’s a lot of responsibility, but if we expect to see change in our world for God, we must take this challenge on.
In your own life, I challenge you to figure out what you are sowing. Are you sowing love? Are you sowing anger, hatred, lust? We really do reap what we sow.
Man up!
